Shenmue 3 has beaten good financially, but is not a mass market game per publisher

The parent company of Deep Silver sends mixed signals for the actual performance of the game.

Shenmue 3 was something like a miracle, a one-time deal. The continuation should never take place due to the notorious poor performance of the original games, but crowdfunding contributed to it that it became reality. It seemed that the game was damned to repeat the story after it reported that it was under expectations. But it seems that the parent of the publisher Deep Silver offers a different attitude that may be more optimistic.

During a presentation of the Embracer Group (the parent company of Deep Silver) CEO Lars Wingefors commented the game. Surprisingly, he said financially, the title was okay, despite former reports of the company that shenmue 3 had developed below average. But he also explained that his performance showed that the game was not a mass market title, but it called Kernish, whatever that means (thanks to VGC for transcription of the lecture).

Shenmue 3 is an IP and a product that I love, and I think financially it's okay and I'm glad that the nuclear fans are satisfied, he said. However, I think that it is a challenge to consider this as a mass market product. This is a central niche product, and I think that's the comment I want to do to this game.

It feels like a kind of mixed messaging, but it could also be the attempt of the company to achieve bad performance, or Wingefors could relate to the crowdfunding element of the game, which undoubtedly part of the cost of Deep Silver and Embracers Group compensated. In any case, it seems as if a further continuation is in the air, although the creator of the game wants to create it. Who knows what the future brings shenmue, but that's far more life than the franchise once, I suppose.
